Events & Programs >> Introductory Sculling Classes

During June and July the MRRA is proud to offer 2 eight-session Learn to Row programs. The programs are open to absolute beginners, those looking to improve from some basic skills they have acquired or sweep rowers looking to transfer their talents to two blades!

Sessions are taught by both experienced rowers (occasionally ex-USRowing squad athletes) and prior participants of the program. All have found an enthusiasm and commitment to the sport of rowing that they are eager to share with others.

Participants of the programs are taught the basics of boat handling and water safety on dry land or on the dock - however the vast majority of time is spent on the river. Participants can experience sculling from a stable recreational scull to a competitive racing shell. Often participants will row in a double scull with an experienced oarsperson.  The program is specifically designed to work with your individual progress and comfort level.

These programs have proved very popular and with a limit on the number of participants, early application is recommended.

2008 Program Information

At the request of UMass/Lowell, the Learn To Row program for 2008 has been cancelled due to renovations at the Bellegarde Boathouse.

We will honor the current waiting list next year when we look to fill the 16 available positions.  The waiting list is currently 40 people deep.  In October 2008, we will again be accepting your e-mail reservation for a place in a future program, but until then we are closing the reservations.  Please check back in October 2008 for more information.  It is possible that we might expand the program to make up for lost time, in which case the waiting list will be erased quickly.

About the Classes

Classes are typically held from 6:00 to 7:15 pm weather permitting, rain dates TBA.  Participants must be at least 18 years of age or high-school student with attending parent or guardian at each session.  Normally, the classes will run for four weeks on a Tu/Th or Mo/We schedule depending on the availability of staff.
